UNIONS ROW OVER BOYCOTT OF ISRAEL

UNION leaders yesterday backed a boycott of goods from “illegal” Israeli settlements and called for a halt to arms sales to Israel.
But the TUC Congress in Liverpool headed off calls for a general ban on goods from Israel.
The Fire Brigades Union had urged the TUC to promote a “targeted” boycott and to encourage members not to buy any goods from Israel.
But after frantic behind-the-scenes negotiations delegates accepted a toned-down version.
TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: “This is not a call for a general boycott of Israeli goods and services, which would hit ordinary Palestinian and Israeli workers, but targeted, consumer-led sanctions directed at businesses based in, and sustaining, the illegal settlements.”
